How to use your scooter safely outdoors
If you own a mobility scooter or are considering purchasing one, it's essential to keep these road safety guidelines in mind while out and about on your mobility scooter.
Some Quick Tips:
- Always do your research and speak to an expert before making a purchase.
- Test a scooter so you understand the operation and what is important to you.
- Remember that the distance that you get our of your battery will depend on the condition of the battery, the weight you have on the scooter as well as the terrain you are travelling on
- An annual service is recommended for all mobility scooters, powerchairs and electric wheelchairs. If you use your scooter daily and for longer trips, it may also be a good idea to service it more frequently to ensure smooth operating
- Make sure you are familiar with your scooter, the controls and the road rules before going on your first trip.
Insurance
It is not required by law to have your scooter insured. However, you may wish to do so for your peace of mind. RAC offers roadside assistance for your scooter at a low annual fee, which is an excellent service if you often travel great distances on your scooter. Several providers will protect your scooter against theft. We recommend you speak to your current insurance company first about mobility options.
Going out and About
- Visibility equals Safety. Ensure your attention is always on your surroundings, and you are highly visible. Some mobility scooters are brightly coloured for that reason, while other brands may have reflectors placed strategically on the scooter. Another affordable and quick-fix option is adding a flag to your scooter's back. This is especially important if you are using portable scooters or travel scooters, as you are seated relatively low and may be hard to see, especially for SUVs. If your scooter is equipped with lights, we recommend having these turned on when you travel outdoors.
- One-person only. Mobility scooters are designed to carry one passenger, while some models allow for extra space. Legally, only one user is permitted per scooter. Avoid overloading your scooter. Know your scooter's weight capacity. Keep in mind that your shopping also has substantial weight to it. We recommend always allowing for a minimum of 10kg additional weight when making your selection.
- Avoid hanging bags onto the handlebars. This is tempting, but it will make it much harder to control your scooter, especially when travelling on inclines and bumps. It could also lead to an unbalanced scooter and increase the risk of tipping when traversing hills or kerbs.
Where to use your scooter
In Australia, you are classed as a pedestrian when travelling on a mobility scooter. This means that if a footpath is available, you should use it at all times, including using pedestrian crossings. If no path is available, you can use the road, but stay as far to the side as possible on the side facing the traffic. Always be courteous of other road and footpath users and travel at an appropriate speed for your area.
